What a Summer for the Sharks! Preseason Mailbag
It’s been an exciting summer for the San Jose Sharks!
So it’s a good time for a pre-preseason subscriber’s mailbag!
Thank you so much for subscribing! Go here if you haven’t subscribed yet!
sanjosehockeynow.com/membership-account/membership-levels/
Ken Fischer: Now that Brodie Brazil is out at NBC, who are we going to get stuck with for Pre and Post-Game? (3:16)
James R: Any recent chatter about Joe Pavelski joining the San Jose Sharks’ front office or coaching staff in some capacity? (6:15)
Rothgar: What is Shakir Mukhamadullin’s preferred nickname?
Flying Frenchman: Can you talk about the phases of a rebuild and where the Sharks are? (12:28)
Bring Back Celebrini: Since Grier has taken over, he appears to have changed over about 60 percent of the organizational depth chart. Have you seen any other NHL club go through such a dramatic change in such a short period of time, and if so, how long did it take for those clubs to climb back into contention? (20:15)
Chris Boucher: How do the Sharks get into the position where they’re contending for a playoff spot by the 2025-26 season? (33:36)
Joshua: Who do you see as a realistic target for the Sharks to pursue or what position do you see them building upon? (39:50)
SJShorky: Do you think Mike Grier makes some big purchases or acquisitions next summer?
Matt Harrison: Who are some potential free agents or trade targets that you think may be on Grier’s radar in the next 1-3 years?
Stephen Akerson: How do you each view the balance between tanking and establishing a winning culture these next few seasons? I find it tempting to keep chasing top-five picks, but obviously that has to change at some point. (55:38)
Mark Bonham: Which top prospects are most likely to be on the opening night roster? (1:06:41)
Lizbeth DeSelm: Not really a question, but a vision that is both exciting and terrifying. I can’t help but look at the Leon Draisaitl extension and looming Connor McDavid extension and feel like I am looking at issues the Sharks will be facing in eight years with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith (or William Eklund or Sam Dickinson). (1:08:45)
Meetyourmako: I was told that the San Jose Sharks’ goal horn is a foghorn taken from a decommissioned ship, I have been dying to know its provenance? Can you uncover the name of the ship that foghorn came from?
Alaskan_ice: At this point, there are quite a lot of ex-Sharks players around the organization. Some have issues with this process, I like it. Do you think it’s a good idea to bring back people that wore teal? (1:14:20)
TJ: Is there any concern that the Sharks alumni that Grier is hiring back, they never got over the hump and that may translate to the younger players they are developing? Always seemed like there was an element missing from those 2000s and 2010s teams despite all the success.
_sharkzilla_: Is there anything in the works to get another guest on the show like Pierre McGuire/Jimmy Murphy again (or better yet Greg Wyshynski) talking about the current state of the Sharks’ rebuild? (1:19:42)
Embrace_the_rebuild: How many more seasons would it take before Sharks get to the playoffs? Win a playoff series? (1:26:37)
Gary To: What do you think is Mukhamadullin’s biggest skill-set and what is his weakest skill that he needs to work on?
Jenna B: When should the holiday video return? Who is lowkey the funniest guy on the Sharks, staff or player? (1:36:25)
jacob b: Is this the off-season the best in San Jose Sharks history?
Steven Stoker: Is this the end of Logan Couture’s return? (1:51:18)
David Gotlieb: Who are the best mascots?
Patrick: Among the prospects, who are the potential busts? (2:00:10)
Zeke: What happened to Yaroslav Askarov in the playoffs?
Alex Genadinik: Who should the San Jose Sharks deal at the Trade Deadline? Any surprises there?
Any Askarov-like trade targets for a young defenseman? (2:07:00)
Eric Pichette: Who has the better offensive numbers this season, Eklund, Celebrini, or Smith?
Matthias893: Have there been any indications the Sharks or NBC would be interested in a more direct streaming model? (2:19:55)
Splash114: Of the veteran defensemen, who, if any, do you think will spend time with the Barracuda and/or on waivers?
George West: What are the odds of Celebrini playing 1C for most of the year? And does Will Smith have a chance at being the 2C? (2:27:35)
El Gato Joe: Why didn’t they buy out Vlasic?
Chaz Marshall: Have the San Jose Sharks hired a Russia-based scout to replace Igor Eronko? (2:35:15)
Fin Coe: What players have benefited or suffered from the Sharks’ system? How has the Luke Kunin trade aged? (2:36:48)
Daniel Almaraz: With the announcement of Celebrini and Smith living with Thornton and Marleau respectively next season, I’m curious, have there been any other Sharks vet/rookie combos that we know about over the last couple years?

Sometimes askararov still looks a little bit wild, trying to make the Highlight reel save to much. Thats probaply part of his agressive style of play. That's coachable. But the talent is through the roof. Giving up two firsts is a lot but if he pans out this is the price you have to pay for a talent like that. With his age the timeline is perfect for the sharks. It seems everthing is falling in to place. MG did a very good job.

Why would we be rooting for Vegas in this situation? Ideally they come in dead last, we have a much better year, the Vegas pick wins the lottery, and we draft 1OA again despite not being that bad. This gives us EVEN MORE reason to root against Vegas because only one of us has to be bad this year for us to get a top pick.

    • @ShengPeng
      @ShengPeng 14 днів тому

I think most likely scenario, you want that Vegas pick in the 20's, and prepare for the Sharks' pick to end up in the top-5. So that's what I mean by cheering for Vegas, you don't want both to end up in the top-10. Obviously, you want roles reversed, Vegas bottoming out and San Jose contending, but we still may be some time away from that

    • @TyLikesToast
      @TyLikesToast 11 днів тому

@@ShengPeng why wouldn't we want both to end up top-10? sure it means the deal for Askarov looks a little bit more in the Preds favor, but nothing we can do about that now. The Vegas pick being a lottery pick gives us an extra crack at the lottery before we decide which pick to keep. I don't really care about sending the 2OA pick to the preds if it means we're keeping the 1OA.

The Blues sweetened the pot to complete the offer sheet by sending the Oilers another 3rd round pick and a mid-round prospect. I don't think the Oilers would have had leverage to ask for anything more without offloading Ceci first to make matching the offer sheet a legitimate threat. The Blues end up paying the price for the Oilers to dump Ceci. Also we got Askarov!!

Hey Boys, Marco has always been one of "my guys" and I get emotional every time I think about him. A couple of things for you: 1) I would love Marco to be the Sharks head coach but, NOT NOW! This team is not ready to be successful and if Marco were hired it would absolutely break my heart to see him get the Quinn treatment! For that reason I am glad he was not hired. Marco said he is ready to be a head coach in the NHL and I take him at his word but, the Sharks aren't ready to have him as head coach. I will always hope that a day will come when we can welcome Marco home as our new head coach when the time is right. Does this mean that I think Coach Warzofsky is going to fail? Yes, I do. This team is still at least 3 years away from being capable of contending for a play off spot in my opinion assuming that the Sharks deal with a normal amount of NHL adversity over that time span (i.e., injuries, players underperforming/underdeveloping per expectations, etc.). 2) I have a Marco moment for you from back in the day when I met Marco and its pretty funny. I don't know if you guys were around when Marco was a rookie but, I was a fan back then and Marco was definitely one of my guys from the begining. You might recall that when Marco came into the league the Sharks used to have an annual festival during the last 3rd of the season (approximately) called Fanfest where the players would be spread out around the arena with the coaches and broadcasters and you would get an official team photo for the season and you could go around and get autographs and meet the players, coaches and broadcasters. As I mentioned this was later in the season which was hard on the players because they have to report on an off day to shake hands, sign crap and smile for pictures and what not when all they really want is to chill and recover before their next game! Marco's rookie season he was set up in the TV broadcast booth right on the rail ensconced between Ken Sutton (a veteran player who only played sporadically) and Kelly Hrudy with young Marco in the middle protected. By the end of the event in the mid to late aftrenoonish you can imagine how tired all the players were and how ready to get the hell out of there and go home to relax. The Sharks had us snaking our way from above through the seats down to our right before we took a short flight of steps down and turned to our left along the railing to meet the guys in succession before we left with our signatures. It was a warm day and we are all tired too. There was a lady with a little kid in a stroller a few people in front of me and it took about 35 minutes to work your way down the seats until we got to where Marco and the boys were waiting to meet us. About 3 rows or so from the stairs down to meet the guys that little kid in the stroller starts going OFF havinng a major melt down and it's a nightmare. Nobody was talking anymore even the plaeyrs. I know I was thinking and I am sure many of the others including the players were thinking "lady please take your kid and go outside! Please!" That lady would not go though. She persisted treating us all to this ear splitting meltdown for the bettwe part of 15 minutes or so. It was horrible. Finally that lady reaches the floor in front of the players and we are all waiting as she is navigating that stroller into position so she can go past the players. There is a brief hold up while she is doing this and the players are now right below me as I am in the last part of the line about 4 people from being able to take the stairs down to get my autographs. I am literally right over Marco's 19 year old head and it just came to me what to do. I loudly called down to Marco: "Marco! What did you do?" I think I startled him a little but, instinctively he looked up at me looking down on him and said with his German accent: "I didn't do nothing?" And everybody roared with laughter including that lady for a few moments. I said it loudly enough that everyone left in line and all the players below could hear it and Marco responded loud enough that I think everyone heard it. It was very funny and makes me smile every time I recall it. Marco Sturm...my guy! Thanks boys for such a wonderful interview, Peter St. John Clovis, CA

One thing to consider is that with Ceci, he could pair with the Sharks young defensemen that most likely will play (Thrun and Shakir). Being Ceci plays on the right and the aforementioned young players (Thrun and Shakir) this seems to work out. The other great options the Sharks had before the trade would be? Benning after a full year of no games? I do not think so. Rutta? Maybe, but Ceci is better or if we kept Emberson? Nope! I think the moves help the Sharks develop the players they have more faith in (Thrun and Shakir). One more thought. There is a player no one talks about, Thompson. They traded for him and he was a highly rated AHL defensemen (like Emberson) and they might believe he will be a better player than Emberson once developed. Also, when they traded for him he was supposed to be ready to play games in the NHL. So this might allow him to get games when having Emberson would not have allowed for that. With all trades, lets look at it again in a year or so. I agree with the character thing as well. They are trying to build a culture for the young players and he will definitely help with that.

Askarov does not care where he goes he just wants to play in the NHL, and the sharks are trending in the right direction and they would give him all the opportunities to establish himself as an NHL starter. while contenders wouldn't trust him as a starter maybe not even in a backup role.

@@Retr-vc4wn I know nothing about where he would want to go so that may be true, but basing off all the comments on immaturity and hot-headedness I would assume getting blown out 10-0 and the worst D corp in the league could trigger him. If he would be assigned to the cuda as sheng suggested then maybe?

Doesn't Edmonton need cap space for Draisaitl next offseason?

I loved Nabby as a goalie. But since he come on board as a coach, our goaltending has been below average. I don't know if he belongs in his role with the Sharks.

Look what happened with Adin Hill, Kaapo, and what we got Blackie for? That’s why u don’t trade for a goalie. Edstrom had one shot off the post in the dev camp and I saw a 300 goal scorer in this league! I still can’t believe Sway is still out there… he’d be worth futures in draft capital to me. I get attached to players once drafted. We have a projected core coming up that we shouldn’t mess with… draft goalies higher in the coming years, offer sheet Sway or stay with Blackie who showed he has swagger… if a goalie is good they may get burnt out without good D-men in front of them 😅

IMO, if Ty Emberson is a future top 4 defenseman…that’s fine. Sign him next summer when he’s a UFA. There’s basically no risk to this trade, the Sharks upgrade a defenseman, and receive a 3rd round pick for their troubles.

It’s more likely he hits waivers again and the Sharks can take him back for free. Edmonton isn’t trusting their cup contender to a 2nd year D with 30 games experience.

@@SharkFan93 100 percent. Especially if they now have the cap space flexibility to bring in a true top 4 defenseman. That would put Emberson in the bottom 6 and on the bubble for possibly heading to Bakersfield. Let’s be real: Broberg is a better young defenseman with a higher ceiling and even he had a tough time sticking with the team.
